Helping Children Read KJV Language
Older English is a reading skill, not an obstacle to hide. Teach the word that blocks understanding and leave the verse itself intact.
Five rules
- 1Keep the original verse visible.
- 2Explain only the word that blocks understanding.
- 3Use a child-friendly gloss beside the verse, not as a replacement for the verse.
- 4For older children, sometimes show how a word’s meaning changed over time.
- 5Teach children to ask what a word meant in its sentence before assuming its modern meaning.
